THE TEXAS CITY MAYOR RACE WILL have two candidates for the position as Dedrick Johnson, Sr. and Phil Roberts each turned in their paperwork in their bid to replace Matthew Doyle when the city’s voters decide on May 2.

Johnson, who studied at the University of Texas at Austin, served as City Commissioner, District 3 from 2000-16, working with Doyle and former Mayor Carlos Garza. He is a lifelong Texas City resident and a former TCISD educator whose business, Dedrick Johnson Productions, has implemented programs such as the annual Mistletoe Jam, a Christmas gala benefiting the Galveston County Food Bank and the Texas Family Campout, an outdoor experience designed to bring families together through a weekend of camping.

“My vision is to do all I can to keep Texas City moving in a progressive direction, making it a great place to live, work and play,” Johnson said in his announcement. “Together, we can enhance city services, including police and fire departments, by providing them with top-notch professional development to augment their capacity to protect and serve, and salaries that reflect their lifesaving work.

“We can also encourage beneficial collaborations between our city, school district and industries to provide services to youth and prepare our citizens for an increasingly technological workforce.”

Roberts, who also studied at UT, is currently serving as the Mayor pro team and Commissioner for Texas City. He is also a local businessman and attorney who has received numerous accolades for his community service in both Texas City and Galveston County.

While Roberts plans to focus on public safety, he also proposes to address drainage and storm protection issues. The rapidly-growing city is also a top-shelf priority. Roberts, who has been married to his wife Paula for 43 years and the father of three sons, has chosen “Untap the Potential for Texas City” as his slogan.
