The Texas City Independent School District Board of Trustees accepted Superintendent Dr. Rodney Cavness’ letter of retirement on January 14, 2020. His retirement is effective July 31, 2020.

“We are sad to see Dr. Cavness retire but we definitely understand as he’s had a long career in public education,” said Bryan Thompson, Board of Trustees President. “It’s been a busy three years under Dr. Cavness’ leadership. There was a deficit budget to overcome, flooded schools to adapt to from Hurricane Harvey that led to overseeing a facilities review committee that ultimately led to the calling of a bond that passed. In addition, Dr. Cavness has brought about an improved, comprehensive school safety program that other schools across the country are trying to replicate.”

“We appreciate that Dr. Cavness gave us so much notice which will allow us ample time to find his successor, and to ensure a smooth transition,” said Thompson.

The Board plans to begin its search for a new superintendent and Dr. Cavness has committed to working with the Board and central administration during the transition.
