ZHIVANNA MAGDALENO of Clear Falls had the best run of the four area wrestlers who competed in last weekend’s state finals at Cypress’ Berry Center as she came close to vying for a state title.
Magdaleno advanced to the girls’ 6A semifinals in the 102-lbs class before losing in a hard-fought contest against eventual state champion Amanda Mcaleavey of Cy Falls in the semifinal round of play. She was one of two area girls who competed in the finals as Camryn Tresler of Clear Falls also made a run before being slowed down by San Antonio Madison’s Caroline Gonzalez in the quarterfinals of the girls’ 6A 165-lbs. class.
In the boys’ bracket, Friendswood’s Joseph Prince fell in the first round to Trebor Moreno of El Paso Eastwood in the 5A 106-lbs class, while Ian Sandoz of Clear Brook reached the quarterfinals before being defeated by John Richardson of Prosper in the 6A 138-lbs. class.
