If the day ends in ‘y,’ there’s local sports to be watched


THE END OF THIS week will be a fun one for area sports fans, as basketball takes centerstage. Soccer fans will also have two huge tournaments to follow, while Santa Fe High School begins looking for the next stars for their softball program.

Wednesday: There’s girls’ high school basketball on the slate as Baytown Lee visits Santa Fe for a 7:00pm tip.

Thursday: High school soccer tournaments are in full swing, with CCISD hosting its annual boys’ tourney that will include Clear Brook, Clear Creek, Clear Falls and Clear Springs along with Friendswood. Meanwhile, Clear Brook, Clear Springs and Friendswood will compete in the I-10 Shootout, one of the Houston area’s biggest girls’ soccer tourneys.

Texas City’s boys’ powerlifting team visits Santa Fe for a meet that begins at 4:00pm.

Swimming and diving fans can visit Galveston Ball’s natatorium as the Tors welcome Stafford and Texas City for a 4:00pm meet.

The Rockets visit the Spurs for a 7:00pm tip. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will have the game live beginning with the pregame show at 6:30pm.

Friday: In boys’ high school basketball, La Marque at Sweeny gets the night going at 6:30pm, followed by state-ranked Clear Falls at Clear Brook, Clear Creek at Dickinson and Clear Lake at Clear Springs each starting at 7:00pm.

In girls’ high school basketball, Danbury at state-ranked Hitchcock begins at 6:00pm, with Sweeny at La Marque at 6:30pm.

The boys’ high school soccer schedule has South Houston at Santa Fe at 6:30pm, while the girls’ high school soccer docket has Clear Creek at Texas City and Galveston Ball at Clear Falls each starting at 7:30pm.

Santa Fe High School softball tryouts will be held from 3:00pm to 5:30pm. There will also be tryouts on Saturday from 10:00am to 12:30pm.

Saturday: A busy day of high school girls’ basketball starts with Friendswood at Galveston Ball and Baytown Lee at Texas City each beginning at 12:30pm. Clear Brook at Clear Falls, Dickinson at Clear Creek and state-ranked Clear Springs at Clear Lake each start at 1:00pm, followed by Manvel at Santa Fe at 1:30pm.

Two high school boys’ basketball games are on the slate with Santa Fe at Manvel beginning at 1:00pm and Galveston Ball at Friendswood at 7:00pm.

Texas City’s boys’ soccer team is on the road for a match against Houston Math & Science that starts at 12:00pm.

The Rockets conclude a two-game road trip to the Spurs beginning at 4:00pm. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest begins coverage with the pregame show at 3:30pm. The game will also be aired live on NBATV.
