The Galveston Art League announces digital art as a new category that will be judged for the next Spring Juried Show, which is open to member and nonmember artists older than 15.

This category will include artworks that employ digital technology to originate the final image from scratch or to significantly modify an image that began in a camera or electronically. A more detailed definition: Digital art uses technology as part of the creative or presentation process such as digital painting (using brushes and tools provided by software such as Photoshop), digital composite/collage (adding multiple photos and objects to create one reconstructed piece), and photo painting (using computer-generated apps or software).

The Art League adds the new category to the existing five, which will continue to be a part of its judged shows: traditional photography, works on paper, works on canvas or board, 3-D, and mixed media. Full details about the juried competition are in the black sidebar of the www.GalvestonArtLeague.com homepage.

The pieces of art that are accepted by the spring show judge will be displayed in the Art League Gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in downtown Galveston. This gallery exhibit, which lasts April 30-May 30, may be viewed from noon to 6 p.m. Fridays through Sundays and will be posted on www.GalvestonArtLeague.com with sales available starting about May 6.

To enter as many as three artworks in any of the six categories, you may bring your pieces to the gallery from 10:00am to 5:00pm on April 26. If you need to bring your entries earlier, you may make an appointment to do so on April 25. Call 409-682-3515 or email sjones9563@gmail.com for an appointment.

Nonmember fees are $20 per entry. Art League members’ fees are $15 apiece for their first two entries and only $5 for the third. Memberships, which start at $40 per year, will be available at the gallery when artwork is brought in for the competition.

Prizes for top entries will be awarded as follows: best of show, $300; first place in a category, $100; and second place, $50.

Sharon Jones, who is director of the Art League’s juried exhibitions and is an award-winning photographer herself, is enthusiastic about the new digital art category. “I personally love the medium and feel it is just as important as working in traditional art forms. It is a great outlet for creative expression. The imagination has no bounds, and I am sure we will all be pleasantly surprised by the art that will be entered,” said Jones.
