GALVESTON, Texas – Galveston ISD’s child nutrition department completed the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA)’s Spring Farm Fresh Challenge for the third consecutive year. From April 12 – May 14, 2021 Galveston ISD students ate local foods, learned about Texas agriculture, and the staff shared their success on social media.
The 2021 Spring Farm Fresh Challenge reflected a commitment to introducing Texas school children to local foods. Prioritizing agricultural education and Texas foods during the challenge is intended to strengthen local economies and recognize the efforts of Texas farmers and ranchers.
“I think it’s important to work with our local farmers to, not only show our children where nutritional food comes from, but also to educate them on the importance of making healthy choices,” says GISD Director of Child Nutrition Jennifer Douglas. “We are proud of the prestige that comes with being recognized as a farm fresh school district but even more proud to say that we are creating healthy habits for our children.”
This year, Galveston ISD incorporated a variety of foods into the menu such as farm fresh cilantro, locally baked beans, farm fresh kale, farm fresh cabbage, and locally sourced milk. To learn more about this year’s challenge and see photos please visit www.gisd.org/FarmFreshChallenge.
