Qualified Applicants Encouraged to Apply – Austin, Texas (July 27, 2021)- State Senator Larry Taylor (R – Friendswood) is seeking nominations of college-bound students for the Texas Armed Services Scholarship. The program will award up to $10,000 for students to utilize for the 2021-2022 school year. In 2009, the Texas Legislature created the Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program to encourage students to become members of the Texas Army National Guard, the Texas Air National Guard, the Texas State Guard, the United States Merchant Marines or to become commissioned officers in any branch of the United States armed services. Each school year the Governor and the Lieutenant Governor may each appoint two students, while each state senator and state representative may appoint one student to receive an award. Students interested in applying for the scholarship must meet two of the following four academic criteria: 1) be on track or graduate high school with the Distinguished Level of Achievement Plan or the International Baccalaureate Program; 2) have a GPA of 3.0 or higher; 3) achieve a college readiness score on the SAT (1070) or ACT (23); and 4) be ranked in the top one-third of the prospective high school graduating class. Students may receive the scholarship for 4 years if they continue to meet eligibility requirements.
