WANT SOME KNOWLEDGE ON COLLEGE?

Not every Junior College or University is the same.

One might not have the program that you are interested

in while another is seemingly too expensive to

attend. (yes, Junior colleges can be expensive as well)

Most of my friends that I graduated with this year have

ventured off to different colleges and universities like

HBU or Texas A&M. Most of them are athletes and

went on a football or basketball scholarship (if only

I had been in shape; I could’ve been in sports) and

most of their fees have been covered. As for my other

friends that have stuck around home such as myself,

96 % of them attend College of the Mainland. COM

offers everything from associate degrees to technical

certifications at an affordable cost. They have programs

such as Air Force ROTC, Process Technology,

Fire Protection Technology and so much more.

One program that College of the Mainland is well

known for is their welding program which a friend of

mine says, “ It didn’t even burn a hole in my pocket

“Welding humor…get it?? No? Okay, sorry. My friend

has already received

a job in less than a

month after completing

the program. Talk

about incredible. It

seems almost impossible

to find jobs right

after you finish getting

either your degree

or your certification,

but that just proves…

anything is possible.

COM has onsite offices

and also professors that will help you find a job

in your field if needed. The Program “ Soft Skills “ is

a training program to help you learn industrial activities

such as sheet rocking and much more. They have

many programs to help you on campus. Call and ask

to speak to the registrar if you are seeking more help

for “ Soft Skills “. Speaking of other programs COM

has to offer, The LVN program is one and I heard it is

outstanding. The employment rate is 97% (imagine the

employment rate 2018) the program I suggest to take

prior to the LVN program (licensed vocational nurse) is

the CNA class (certified nursing assistant) to get you

ready before you go into the second step into getting

your certification. The CNA program offers a get ready,

head start to have information under your belt about

the basics of being a Nurse.

Prairie View A & M University, as known as my Dream

School, have so many special services for any person

that attends. The services can be for both graduate and

undergraduates. For undergraduates, prior to move in

day it is encouraged to join the “ Summer Bridge Programs

“ to help give you extra knowledge before going

into your classes and get you accustom to your

everyday life on campus. This program can also get

you to earn college credits towards your degree. (Take

advantage future PV students) The nursing program

at PV is a phenomenal program that gets you ready

year by year to graduate full of knowledge. Far as my

friends that attend PV that is in the nursing program

she says “ It is challenging and may be difficult for sort

but I would recommend joining the Get Ready to Initiate

a Nursing Degree (GRIND) program which offers a

opportunity to prepare you for a field in the healthcare

world “. Did I mention that they have programs for each

field on campus? Yes, Indeed, If you struggle in some

classes there are programs for your career path, core

classes, pre rec’s and much more. Contact the student

services for more info.

I can not stress enough about how much I want to

inform you about the Pro’s in colleges, there are much

more to come on compare and contrast of universities

and junior colleges, The reasoning of why I chose

COM and PV are because of the high acceptance

rate and the pricing which is affordable in many cases.

They both strive to help their students in any way possible

and also help high schools around their areas to

get them ready for college such as COM has a Program

called “ Collegiate “ when I attended Dickinson

High School I was informed that I should participate

in the program, I did not want to because I was working

at the time and struggling to do my regular high

school work. The “ Collegiate “ program helps students

earn a associates degree as well as the high school

diploma. Please if you are in the Dickinson Area attending

high school DO COLLEGIATE, It’s worth the

hassle and the tassel! Do Not Be Like Me; I could’ve

been a lot further than I am as of now. Along with PV,

they have workshops throughout the summer to help

you before you enter your colleges classes so you can

go into your classes with confidence instead of sitting

there lost into space.

they have to offer, email: asireyae@yahoo.com,

If you would like me to research information about your
