WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT THIS?

Each week I get one if these lists and it breaks my heart because I know the effort to do something truly effective is beyond me alone. There are almost 60 lives listed here – 15 puppies. Are there 15 families out there who would love to make their Christmas special by adopting one of these young pups? And then there is the obvious issue. Why are these puppies being brought into the world unwanted? This is a complex issue with barriers like cost, ignorance, carelessness, and worst of all – puppy mills – that exacerbate the problem. So, what do we do? Animal control is overwhelmed and doing all they can with discounted spay and neutering services, but it is going to require more. We are a community of givers. Rotary, United Way, Foundation for the Future, Harvey Long Term Recovery and so many other individuals and organizations that step forward to relieve the pain and suffering of those less fortunate. This is not an accusation. This is little more than a call to action. How can we, as a community, alleviate the suffering of these most precious of God’s creatures? How can we deter breeding for money? How can we pitch in and help control the stray population in our neighborhoods? Can we, as a community, come together and say; “This is unacceptable, and we will come together and find ways to ensure that these animals find responsible, safe homes. We will ensure that puppies are not born and then abandoned. We will hold owners accountable for proper care of their pets when we see animals chained outside, allowed to roam off leash, and we sill help them understand how to properly care for their pets.” This is an invitation to start a conversation. Can we refuse to accept the status quo and accomplish something extraordinary by coming together to tackle this problem?
