By: Bridget Buffa The City of Texas City is fortunate to have one of the finest Libraries in our area. Moore Memorial Public Library serves our city as well as all of Galveston County. The Library was established in 1928. The current building was erected in 1964 and expanded to 21,000 square feet in 1987. It is accredited as a Texas Public Library by the TSLAC and is a member of the Galveston County Library System. The service population is over 56,00 persons with over 22,000 active borrowers. It staffs 14 full time plus 2 parttime employees. The holdings include over 206,000 catalogued items, 9,000 eBooks, 100 print magazines and newspaper subscriptions. Patrons have access to high speed wired and wireless computers, laptops, printers, scanners and copier. During the FY 2018 the Library received 113,00 physical visits with over 150,00 materials checkedout. Reference questions were about 15,000. The Library offers many programs for all ages. In 2018 the number of programs offered were 265 with an attendance of 3,985. We have some exciting renovations to look forward to in the upcoming future. I will keep you updated with more details to come. You can visit the library at www.texascity-library. org. Library hours are Monday-Wednesday 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday & Friday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Libraries are essential to giving citizens access to knowledge. More importantly, however libraries are the places where you can expect smart and clear answers to even the most difficult questions. Remember, Google can bring you back 100,000 answers, but a Librarian can bring you back the right one. Where are you headed today? Every direction is good if there is a library along the way.
