Area places six teams in state softball playoffs
THE STATE high school softball playoffs get under way this week and while the stage is set for
the three area 5A teams that advanced to the postseason, the 6A field would not be
determined until a pair of tiebreaking games on Monday night brought clarity to the field.
Alvin captured the District 24-6A title with an 11-3 mark and will face Clear Springs in the bi-
district round, but Clear Creek and Clear Falls, both with 9-3 records, needed to settle matters
in a tiebreaking game for second place on Monday night.
Meanwhile, Pearland and Dawson faced off in a one-game tiebreaker that decided the District
23-6A championship on Monday night. The results of those games would finalize the bi-district
round matchups that are slated to begin on Thursday.
There was no uncertainty surrounding the 22-5A field. Friendswood, which completed district
play a 14-0, hosts Dayton in a one-game Region III bi-district round game at 6:30pm on
Thursday evening. Santa Fe (11-3 in district) faces longtime postseason rival Port Neches-
Groves at Crosby High School in a winner-take-all contest at 7:00pm on Thursday.
Texas City will be the area’s first playoff team in action when the Stingarees square off at home
against Barbers Hill in the opener of a best-of-three series at 5:30pm on Wednesday. Game 2
will be at Barbers Hill at 5:30pm on Thursday. If necessary, Game 3 will be played at Barbers Hill
at 5:30pm on Friday.
