Pros begin to take up area sports schedule
IT’S THAT TIME of year when the high school sports schedule begins to wind down. Based on
the results of last week, there will likely be a handful of area softball teams that advanced to
the second round, while bi-district round matchups for high school baseball playoffs will be
finalized.
Sunday: It’s baseball under the lights at Minute Maid Park as Wade Miley (1-2, 3.58 ERA) takes
the mound for the Astros when they conclude a weekend series against the Indians, who will
counter with Carlos Carrasco (2-2, 6.00 ERA). ESPN will have the game live beginning at 6:00pm.
Depending on the outcome of Friday’s Game 6 of the Warriors-Clippers series, the Rockets
could be playing Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals at Oakland against the
defending World Champs. Game time would be decided shortly after Game 6 if the Warriors
win.
The Sugarland Skeeters continue their season-opening series against the Southern Maryland
Blue Crabs at Constellation Field beginning at 2:05pm. It will also be the first Sunday Funday, as
there will be pregame catch on the field, player autographs and a postgame Kids Run the Bases.
Monday: La Marque High School will hold its Spring Sports banquet in the Wings of Heritage
Room at Nessler Center beginning at 6:00pm.
The Astros will start a six-game road trip when Justin Verlander (4-0, 2.61 ERA) goes for
Houston when they visit Minnesota beginning at 6:40pm. The Twins are scheduled to go with
Jake Odorizzi (2-2, 4.37 ERA), who defeated the Astros on Monday night. AT&T Sportsnet
Southwest will start its coverage with the pregame show at 6:00pm.
The Skeeters will offer free admission to military/first responders for their 7:05pm game against
the Blue Crabs. It will also be $2 drinks for the first Margarita Monday of the season.
Tuesday: Gerrit Cole (1-4, 4.71 ERA) closes out the month of April for the Astros in the middle
game of the series at the Twins, who will go with Michael Pineda (2-1, 5.63 ERA). AT&T
Sportsnet Southwest will have the game beginning with the pregame show at 6:00pm.
The Skeeters will welcome older fans as part of its Silver Skeeters Tuesday. Seniors will get in
free for the 7:05pm game.
