SAMANTHA COPELAND didn’t know what to expect when she moved from Dickinson into a new home in Texas City more than five years ago, but faith and persistence has resulted in Copeland moving one day closer to the official opening of the place of her dreams.
Copeland will officially open Yoga on 6 th next month, giving area residents the opportunity to relieve stress and find their spiritual path all under the same roof. Her path took a unique turn, yet it was one that Copeland is now grateful for.
“I was going to be in business with someone else, but that all fell through last year,” she said. “I really thought I had lost everything, but I decided I would teach yoga out of my big back yard. My son was taking karate classes at Texas City Martial Arts, and my sister was next door at the daycare center, and one day, Richard Cazares (owner of Texas City Martial Arts) came to me and said, ‘I have this middle studio (available). You should just open it up there.”
Surprised by the offer, Copeland needed time to ponder the decision. However, Cazares’,encouragement convinced her to take advantage of the opportunity.
Copeland has been practicing yoga for the past six years. “I like the trinity of mind, body and spirit and how it all works as one,” she said.
She has also welcomed the challenge of what has become a busy schedule. A single mother to an eight-year-old boy, Copeland also works as a massage therapist. “It’s tricky,” said a smiling Copeland, “but I’m able to balance it all.”
Between now and the opening, which will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Texas City-La Marque Chamber of Commerce, Copeland is running small classes at the studio twice a week.
“One of the purposes of opening a yoga studio in Texas City is to give people something that is not around here,” she said. “It’s something you’d normally find in downtown Houston, but it’s something that will be more affordable. Healing shouldn’t be expensive. It should be affordable for everyone.”
