The area — and state — lost a gem on Thursday when longtime Clear Creek boys’ basketball coach Buddy Carlisle passed away at the age of 70 after a brief illness.

Carlisle coached the Wildcats from 1976 to 2006, finishing his coaching career with a 579-351 record. Clear Creek made 12 playoff appearances in that span, highlighted by a run to the 5A, Region III semifinals in 1992 along with recording a 30-win campaign in 1998-99.

Coaching the Wildcats was just part of Carlisle’s legacy with CCISD, beginning his journey as a basketball player at Clear Creek, playing under the iconic Bill Krueger. Carlisle would eventually coach against his mentor when Krueger coached at Clear Lake, which helped fuel the longtime rivalry between the two schools.

After retiring from coaching, Carlisle continued to be a welcomed presence at CCISD sporting events along with showing up to other Galveston County area sports events.

Clear Creek’s George Carlisle Fieldhouse is named for George Carlisle, Buddy’s father, who coached the boys’ basketball team in the 1950s and 60s. The court is named after Buddy Carlisle.

He is survived by his wife, Jenny, and daughters Kelsey and Kaleigh.

Funeral services are pending.
