EACH OF THE three area boys basketball teams ranked in the Texas Association of
Basketball Coaches state poll maintained their spots entering the final night of the regular
season on Tuesday night.
Texas City, ranked 18th in the boys Class 5A poll, had a chance to earn a share of the
District 23-5A title when they played Fort Bend Elkins on Tuesday. The Stingarees, 20-11
overall, had a 12-3 record in district play, a game behind the Knights (24-11), who came
into the finale ranked tenth in state.
Like Texas City, La Marque came into Tuesday with a chance to claim a district crown.
The Cougars (19-11 overall) were 9-1 in District 24-3A heading into their last game of the
season against visiting Brazos and were ranked 18th in the 3A poll. Hitchcock, ranked
19th with a 17-11 record, still had an outside chance to tie La Marque for a share of
the district title but needed a win on the road over Rice Consolidated and a loss by the
Cougars to pull off the feat.
The girls of Clear Springs moved into the tenth spot of the Class 6A rankings entering
their Region III bi-district round game against George Ranch at Pearland High School
on Tuesday night. The Chargers, 26-7 overall, climbed two spots after running through
District 24-6A with a perfect 14-0 record.
Hitchcock’s girls, winners of District 24-3A, came into their Region III contest against
Anahuac at North Shore High School on Monday with a record of 24-6 and were ranked
21st overall in the Class 3A poll.
