Galveston College will feature an exhibition of recent
ceramic art by Linnis Blanton from Monday, March 19,
to Thursday, April 5, in the third floor Fine Arts Gallery
at Galveston College, 4015 Avenue Q, Galveston, Texas.
The gallery is open during regular college hours.
Blanton is a southeast Texas native and adjunct
instructor of ceramics at Lamar University. He received
his B.S. and B.F.A. from Lamar University, and worked
as an art teacher in the Port Arthur Independent School
District for 30 years.
“The flexibility and sensuousness of the clay is the
reason I love to make vessels. The clay is ceaselessly
recording my touch, ideas and thoughts as I express
my inner creativity. A major influence on my work was a
trip to New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona to visit sacred
sights of the Anastazia Indian. My vessels suggest the
natural phenomena of the canyon walls that are transformed
from my imagination to the pots surface. As I
work on the vessels that represent the canyon walls, they
begin to change into figures. The figures seem to appear
as spirits of ancestors. I alter, modify, push and pull the
surface of the clay in an attempt to express a connection
of the past and present.”
Blanton is well known throughout the area for his
ceramic vessels and sculptures that subconsciously
reference figurative subjects and the organic elements
of the natural world in his shape, texture and form. The
exhibition will focus on recent works by the artist.
There will be a closing reception on April 5 from 6-8
p.m. in the gallery. The public is invited.
