So the story goes like this. If you drop a frog in a pot of
boiling water, it will of course frantically try to clamber out.
But if you place it gently in a pot of tepid water and turn
the heat on low, it will float there happily. As the water
gradually heats up, the frog will sink into a stupor, just like
a person in a hot bath, and before long, it will simply allow
itself to be boiled to death. With all the negativity going on
in this world, its easy to become numb to it; to just sink
into the everydayness of it and get swallowed up in all that
negativity; boiling away our purpose and our joy.
So in todays Be The Change, I would like to talk about
being the positive in the negative. It might seem hard to
stay positive when you are surrounded by so much negativity.
Day in and day out, people on your job are arguing
about being the smallest things. You turn on the news
and it seems like their only job is to keep everyone in a
state of fear. What is going to happen this hurricane season
– when is the next mass shooting – are we going to
war with this country or that one – and you have taken all
of this in so about the time you get with friends and family,
and all that negativity that you have taken in begins to
come out. Which is a bunch of negativity.
As believers, we have to learn how to control the “air”
around us. And use our influences to take the negativity
to a positive. We need to make a choice to be the influencer
not the influenced. Because when we choose not
to be influenced by what goes on around us, then surely
we are free to influence what is around us. And when we
have a pure heart and the right motives when we are doing
the influencing God will guide us to be able to provide
the positivity we need.
We all know there is a hurting world out there with
so much negativity that right now people are willing to
grasp onto anything whether it be negative or positive. In
the Bible, it says we are called to be Salt and Light and
both of those agents are influencers. Where ever there
is light, darkness cannot stay. John 1:1 says the truth of
God’s Word brings light to the darkened hearts of sinful
man. In the same way that salt enhances the flavor of
the food it seasons, the followers of Christ stand out as
those who “enhance” the flavor of life in this world. Christians,
living under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and in obedience to Christ, will
inevitably influence the world for good, as salt has a positive
influence on the flavor of the food it seasons. Where there is strife, we are to be
peacemakers; where there is sorrow, we are to be the ministers of Christ, binding
up wounds, and where there is hatred, we are to exemplify the love of God in Christ, returning
good for evil. So as you go about your days, your work, your school, and life in
general, being that you are the salt and the light what are you enhancing in a positive way?
A smile and a kind word can be both the light and the sale that enhances another person’s life. How you lead
your life is often the only influencer someone might need to lead them to a richer life. Each of us has a choice to
make when negativity surrounds us. Don’t ever think others have it all peaches and cream. They may just have a
better way of dealing with their own negativity. They may have just chosen to be the Salt and the Light.
So today I would like to encourage you to be the positive in the negative The Bible says we are to be the hands
and the feet of Jesus, and we may be the only Bible some people may ever read. I love what my pastor’s mom, Eloise
Herrin, tells me and I quote ‘ Go out and preach the Gospel………. and use words if necessary.” And, I got it
from the very beginning. Let your life and the way you live be your best sermon. Be The Change You Want To See.
