“THE BIBLE OF TEXAS FOOTBALL” LANDS WITH ITS ANNUAL PROGNOSIS

AS THE month of June pushes toward a conclusion, the Astros remain the focal point of the area sports scene, but the unofficial start of football season begins on Tuesday when the alpha and omega of Texas football finally arrives on newsstards throughout the area.
Sunday: The ball belongs to Justin Verlander (9-2, 1.60 ERA) when the Astros close out their weekend series against the Royals beginning at 1:10pm. The Royals will look to leave Minute Maid Park with a win as Jason Hammel (2-8, 4.88 ERA) handles the starting assignment for Kansas City. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will start its coverage beginning at 12:30pm with the pregame show.
Monday: Texas City High School will host its annual youth soccer camp at Stingaree Stadium from 8:00am to 12:00pm, with campers meeting at the High School cafeteria. The camp is for boys and girls incoming to the second thru seventh grade. Cost is $50 per player.
The players will receive breakfast, lunch and instruction on all facets of the game from Texas City High School coaches Ryan Welch, Jeremy Kauffman and Devin Crump. The final week of Texas City’s Monday Evening 7 on 7 series from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Stingaree Stadium. Rain canceled last week’s event, but Texas City, Hitchcock, La Marque and Santa Fe will get their final chance to compete against other teams until their first scrimmages in mid-August. Attendance is free.
Gerrit Cole (8-1, 2.59 ERA) takes advantage of having his start pushed back a day when takes the mound for the Astros to open their series against the visiting Blue Jays at 7:10pm. Toronto is scheduled to start J.A. Happ (9-3, 3.56 ERA), who went 11-19 in 44 starts with Houston from 2010-11. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will begin with the pregame show beginning at 6:30pm.
Tuesday: Houston gives the ball to Charlie Morton (9-1, 2.74 ERA) in the second game of their series against Toronto, who counters with Aaron Sanchez (3-5, 4.35 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:10pm, with AT&T Sportsnet Southwest starting the night with the pregame show at 6:30pm.
“The Bible of Texas Football,” Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine, will be out on newsstands across the area. The annual issue covers every angle of football, from each of the over 1,400 high schools to the Cowboys and Texans. This year’s cover features new Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher and University of Houston’s All-America defensive tackle Ed Oliver. Worth every penny of its $10.95 price tag, fans are strongly advised to pick up a copy before they run out. Don’t be the one without it.
