TRIBUTE TO RICHARD OVERTON

RICHARD OVERTON was born in the height of Jim Crow and lived long enough to be invited to the White House by the first African-American President. Overton, the oldest survivor of World War II, passed away on Thursday at the age of 112 and left a remarkable legacy that deserves more than just a Google search. More than 73 years have passed since the end of World War II. Overton’s passing leaves us with one less American hero who knew all too well of the consequences that result when governments cannot come to terms with each other. He was at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 when Japanese planes bombed this nation into a conflict it was slowly being pushed into. Despite the oppressive segregation that treated him and other African-Americans with little respect, Overton was part of the “Greatest Generation” who helped save the world from the darkness of the Axis Powers. Overton was American history, and while his name may not stand as brightly as others, he was a reminder of how ordinary citizens were willing to push everything aside to fight for a greater cause. He is also a shining example of finding peace within ourselves and appreciating the simple joys of life can be far greater than pursuing material gain and fleeting fame. We owe it to Overton, and the dwindling number of surviving servicemen and women who fought in the unforgiving heat of the South Pacific, the ceaseless mud of Italy and the bloody fields of Western Europe to learn of their deeds and to be mindful that the freedoms we have in this nation must not be taken for granted. As 2019 approaches, many of us will proclaim resolutions that are but fleeting memories within mere weeks. Perhaps the best way to honor Richard Overton would be to live life to its fullest while also hoping and praying the next “Greatest Generation” will be known for actions other than conquering evil. Thank you, Sir. A grateful nation is forever in debt.
