Mother Nature holds cards to weekend’s schedule
WEATHER PERMITTING will be the two words that could define the weekend’s local
sports schedule. A shift from spring to winter-like weather will come on Thursday
and could dictate the slate on Friday and Saturday.
Wednesday: Years of hard work and dedication will pay off for a host of area high
school football players, who will make their formal commitment to the colleges of
their choice on National Signing Day. Each school in the area projects to have at least
a couple of players who will continue their path as student-athletes to colleges
across the country.
The Rockets conclude a swing out west at the Kings beginning at 9:00pm. Houston
won the first meeting with a 132-112 decision at Toyota Center on November 17.
AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will have the pregame show beginning at 8:30pm.
Thursday: The evening will be filled with a host of junior high school boys’ and
girls’ basketball games, but it will also be filled with watching the skies, as a cold
front is expected to bring rain along with cooler temps that will bring the area back
into winter mode. The front will have a huge impact on a lot of Friday’s schedule.
Friday: There is one girls’ basketball game on the schedule, as La Marque is at Bay
City for a 6:00pm tip-off.
The final Friday of the boys’ high school basketball regular season will start with
Friendswood at Baytown Lee, Clear Creek at Clear Brook, Clear Falls at Clear
Springs, Clear Lake at state-ranked Dickinson, Galveston Ball at Goose Creek
Memorial, Crosby at Santa Fe and Galena Park at Texas City all tipping off at 7:00pm.
Bay City at La Marque starts at 7:30pm.
In boys’ soccer, Clear Springs at Alvin, Clear Falls at Clear Lake, Texas City at Crosby,
Clear Brook at Dickinson, Friendswood at Galveston Ball and Goose Creek Memorial
at Santa Fe each start at 7:30pm.
The girls’ soccer slate has Dickinson at Clear Brook, Clear Lake at Clear Falls, Alvin at
Clear Springs, Galveston Ball at Friendswood, Santa Fe at Goose Creek Memorial and
Crosby at Texas City beginning at 7:300pm.
A busy day of baseball scrimmages has Galveston Ball at Clear Springs, Clear Creek
at Deer Park, Clear Brook at Pasadena Memorial and Clear Falls at Texas City
starting at 4:00pm, followed by Friendswood at Alvin and Brazoswood at Santa Fe at
4:30pm. Houston Heights at La Marque begins at 5:00pm, with Hitchcock at
Beaumont United getting under way at 6:00pm.
Softball scrimmages also are part of the day, as Shadow Creek at Clear Creek, Brazos
at Hitchcock and Texas City at New Caney Porter are under the lights at 6:00pm.
Santa Fe at Manvel starts at 6:30pm.
All five CCISD tennis teams will be at Deer Park for the annual two-day invitational
beginning bright and early at 6:00am.
Track and field season begins in earnest as Clear Brook welcomes Clear Springs,
Friendswood, Galveston Ball and a handful of other schools to the Wolverine Relays.
Clear Creek, Clear Falls and Texas City will be among the schools taking part at the
Deer Park Relays.
Each of the CCISD wrestling teams will be competing in the district championships.
Clear Lake will be the host school for the two-day event that marks the first step
toward the state championships.
Saturday: The morning will have a pair of the final softball scrimmages before the
regular season begins next week. Clear Brook and Dickinson will be at La Porte for a
tri-scrimmage starting at 10:00am, the same time Clear Springs and Friendswood
will be at Dobie for a tri-scrimmage.
The Rockets return home for a nationally televised showdown against the Thunder
beginning at 7:30pm. The two teams split the first two games of the season, with
Oklahoma City taking a 98-80 win over November 8 before Houston ruined
Christmas for Russell Westbrook and company with a 113-109 win on December 25.
ABC-13 will have the game live.
