BRAZOSPORT ISD tabbed Santa Fe football coach Mark Kanipes as the new head coach and athletic director for Brazosport High School last week. He will begin his new role on Monday.
Kanipes led Santa Fe to the school’s first playoff berth since 2009 this past season as the Indians finished 5-6 overall. In his five seasons with the school, Kanipes turned the program around, including the team’s first winning record since 2010.
The move to Brazosport will reunite Kanipes with BISD Athletic Director Alan Weddell, whom Kanipes served as a defensive assistant when Weddell was at La Marque from 1990-97. Kanipes then moved to Pearland, where he served as assistant head coach/defensive coordinator from 1998-2013. He has been part of four state championship teams, winning 4A titles in La Marque from 1995-97 and with Pearland when the Oilers captured the 6A, Division I crown in 2010.
SFISD has begun its search to find a replacement for Kanipes.
The area lost the services of another high school football coach on Tuesday when La Porte named Clear Springs special teams coordinator Anthony Renfro as its new head coach. Renfro, who also served as the Chargers’ assistant head track coach, had been with the program since 2016.
