LUNCH AND A MEETING

Lunch and a meeting is pretty standard fare in the business world and certainly in the business of running a city. But when The Texas City Rotary gets involved it becomes a learning experience and a celebration! After running for office and being elected by their peers, Texas City High School Youth In Government Students were honored at a luncheon after spending the morning with what were counterparts in City Government and touring historical and other significant spots all over Texas City. Each was introduced by the official they would be replacing for the day from the Museum Curator to the Mayor,  all of this is a part of Youth Appreciation Week designed to  recognize these students accomplishments at school and within the community and to give them an opportunity to experience the vital roles our city officials play in making Texas City the wonderful place it is. Two Outstanding students, Megan McKnight and Bobby Serda  were recognized for their exemplary scholastic achievements as well as their involvement in civic and school activities.
Mayor Doyle congratulated these students, and then each official introduced their counterpoint and shared some information about them – their accomplishments, interests and plans for the future. The Rotary Youth In Government Director, Melissa Tortorice,  explained the goals of the week and then introduced Texas City Police Chief Joe Stanton, also a Texas City High School Graduate.
Officer Stanton talked about how TCISD had given him the tools to reach his goals. Twenty-three years ago he joined the Texas City Police Department. He told the Captain interviewing him that his goal was to become Chief of Police. He was told to keep his goals realistic. He pursued his dream, worked his way through the department and eventually achieved his goal. His message – with great risk comes great reward. He discussed his leadership approach explaining the importance of serving as an example to those you are tasked with leading, remaining humble and never discouraging their dreams.
In addition, you can hear the  City Council Meeting which was held in the afternoon with each student assuming the responsibilities of the  positions they were elected to. This was such an excellent learning opportunity for the students as well as the officials that participated. The practice of allowing young people to take an active role in city government, even for one day each year, gives them insight into the inner working of the city as well as an understanding for the importance of civic involvement. It allows them to see what these talented and committed individuals are willing to sacrifice to serve their community and hopefully will inspire them to follow suit when they are adults.
