Schedule gets a big swing of softball, baseball
THE END OF February also means the focus of area sports shifts to softball and baseball. There’s still plenty of regular season boys’ and girls’ soccer on the Tuesday slate along with water polo and boys’ golf.
Sunday: Subscribers of ESPN+ will have the chance to see Santa Fe alum Shelbi Sunseri in action when she and LSU take on nationally-ranked Michigan at 11:30am. Sunseri is off to a blistering start both at the plate and on the mound for LSU, which is ranked seventh in the country. The sophomore entered the weekend batting .435 with six homers and 20 runs batted in during her first 11 games while also striking out 18 batters over 20 innings as she sports a 2-2 record with a 2.80 ERA in five games on the mound.
Monday: Baseball is on tap with five games on the slate, starting with Clear Brook at Pasadena Memorial at 3:30pm. Spring Westfield at Clear Falls and Clear Creek at La Porte are each 6:00pm starts, while Dawson at Friendswood and Dickinson at Seven Lakes begin at 7:00pm.
The Rockets return from a west coast swing to play their first post All-Star Break game at home against the Hawks at 7:00pm. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will begin coverage with the pregame show at 6:30pm.
Spring training baseball is also available as the Astros take on the Mets beginning at 12:05pm. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will have live coverage starting at 11:30am.
Tuesday: The boys’ soccer schedule will have Texas City at Baytown Lee, Clear Springs at Clear Brook, Alvin at Clear Creek, Dickinson at Clear Falls, Santa Fe at Friendswood and Galena Park at Galveston Ball, with each match starting at 7:30pm.
In girls’ soccer, Clear Creek at Alvin, Clear Brook at Clear Springs, Clear Falls at Dickinson, Santa Fe at Friendswood, Galveston Ball at Galena Park and Baytown Lee are each 7:30pm start times.
District play begins in softball for most area teams, with Clear Brook at Clear Creek, Clear Springs at Clear Falls and Dickinson at Clear Lake launching the 24-6A regular season at 6:30pm. Meanwhile, Texas City at Friendswood and Galveston Ball at Santa Fe swing into the 22-5A portion of their seasons starting at 6:30pm. Two non-district game are also on the schedule, with Hitchcock at Anahuac and Stafford at La Marque each starting at 6:00pm.
The evening’s baseball schedule will have Santa Fe at Barbers Hill at 5:30pm, followed by Hitchcock at Bay Area Christian at 6:30pm and Texas City at Clear Springs at 7:00pm.
Water polo action is on the slate with Texas City at Clear Falls starting at 6:00pm.
Texas City will play host to a boys’ golf meet at Bayou Golf Club, with Santa Fe among the schools taking part.
The Astros will take on the Marlins in spring training baseball beginning at 12:05pm. No television for this one, but KBME (790AM) will be on the air for the play-by-play.
