LENT

The strength of any community is enhanced by the worship centers – churches, mosques, synagogues – where people gather to practice their faith. The month of March contains a period of time that both Catholic and Protestant faiths practice. In the spirit of understanding and respect for all faiths,  we will begin offering space for religious organizations to publish special services, events pertaining to those times. Currently, you will find information on Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent and all other significant worship opportunities. Notices are posted in the order they are received.
FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH – 317 5TH AVE. – CHURCH PHONE 409-945-4426 (Tue.-Thur. 8 to 2)
“Drive Thru Ashes” will be offered on Ash Wednesday, March 6th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
We are reaching out to area churches and asking for your email address to send information regarding our LENT directory. We are looking to publish all the events happening in area churches during the Lent season in the hope that more people will see an event near them and be encouraged to participate. Throughout the season we will be taking a deep dive into the history of Lent, the meanings behind the various practices that make up the season and we encourage area religious leaders to submit their take on the season and the roll it plays in Christian life.
We will publish all stories submitted at no charge but we do ask that they be kept to a 350 to 500 word limit. Any relevant topic is welcome. The charge for participating in the Lent Season Calendar of Events  is $25 and information about the events will run from submission time until the event ends or until season is complete.
We encourage all area churches to participate in the hope that all Christians in our communities, practicing or non,  may find a place to worship during this most holy of times in the Christian faith. Please help us emphasize the value of belonging to a church family. As a nation we have been encouraged by technology, by the media and their emphasis on stories that emphasize the possibilities of harm or danger, from food, the air, guns, gangs, that stepping outside one’s home is frightening or unnecessary. We can work remotely, buy remotely, worship remotely, learn remotely. And the end result is even more isolation. Lets see if we can use this season to step outside, meet our neighbors, worship together and hopefully reconnect as a community without it taking a disaster to make it happen. This is an opportunity for our Church Leaders to lead the way, open the door, and invite everyone in.
