First Annual Unity In Community Event a Smashing Success
Strength in numbers seems to be the order of the day as community service organizations and area churches come together to lift up the most vulnerable in our community through Servolution and now Unity in Community. With over 300 individuals reaching out to feed children who depend on school breakfasts and lunches, provide bedding for the homeless and help to complete repairs on homes still recovering from Hurricane Harvey at Servolution, the Unity In Community gathering brought those planners together with other with similar goals to share ideas and come together in Christ to bring hope to the hopeless.
“Jesus was all about a good party and table talk” said Pastor Robin Reeves “I have long had a dream of all the different agencies working together in new ways that would reflect God’s glory, to heal and help the most needy, lifting them up in unprecedented ways.”
Organizations like 4B Disaster Response Network, Resource & Crisis Center, Bay Area Habitat for Humanity and Bay Are Boy Scouts, Galveston Food Bank, and Galveston County Recovers were represented at the event, along with St John’s Methodist Church, The Potter’s House,Memorial Lutheran and First Presbyterian Churches . St. George’s Episcopal Church provided the space and the meal and entertainment was provided by College of the Mainland’s Acapella Group, Duck And Cover. There was a silent auction and a cake auction with the cakes provided by the men of St. George’s. Texas City Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association with Texas City Police Explorers provided the servers.
The next community effort with be “Equip To Serve” which will provide training for those interested in volunteering to help neighbors still trying to recover from Hurricane Harvey. It is hard to impaging and easy to forget the level of devastation that Harvey wreaked on Galveston County almost two years ago. But the truth is that there are people all around us still living in homes with no walls, with recurring mold issues, and others unable to return, living in FEMA trailers to this day as they ewait for their turn to get much needed help to restore their homes.
There is another opportunity to volunteer making “plarn”, the plastic yyarn used to make sleeping mats for the homeless eat Wednesday at “HOPE” community Center located at St. George’s Episcopal church 510 13th Ave. N. Wednesdays at 2:30.
If you are interested in volunteering, there are plenty of opportunities, and 4B Disaster Recovery is willing to train you to tackle what so many of those people still waiting need – hanging sheetrock, installing flooring, and other skills that will allow you to help others now and may well come in handy in the future too!
