Papier mache sculptor Billie Brinkley of Baytown will coach others in her art during a 1½-day Galveston Art League workshop in mid-September.

Participants will craft four-legged creatures – whimsical or realistic – from start to finish by using this ancient sculpting method, which typically consists of pieces of paper bound with an adhesive such as glue or wallpaper paste. The finished form is often painted. Although the medium’s name is French, papier mache (often called “paper mache” in the United States) actually originated in China around 200 B.C.

The workshop will be held at the Galveston Art League Gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in Galveston, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15. The cost is $150 per person, and online registration is available at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com – click on “Workshops” and use a credit card to pay. (For more information, call 832-752-3280 or email gallery2117@gmail.com.)

The Galveston Art League offers low-cost workshops taught by well-known regional artists about once per month. These workshops are part of the 105-year-old Art League’s mission to promote visual arts and art education in the greater Galveston County area. The league also raises the profiles of individual artists through its exhibits, which change monthly, and through its juried competitions, held three times each year; see www.GalvestonArtLeague.com for details.

The Art League is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization. It is largely supported by tax-deductible memberships, sponsorships, and contributions as well as through its annual fundraiser gala.

This year’s gala will honor FeatherFest/PhotoFest (programs of the Galveston Island Tourism Council), the Seawall Interpretive Trail (an initiative of Artist Boat), and Turtles About Town (a Turtle Island Restoration Network project). The theme of the gala is “The Nature of Art/The Art of Nature,” and if desired, guests may wear costumes related to the theme.

The Art League’s laid-back gala will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at the San Luis Hotel Grand Ballroom. The laid-back event includes gourmet food and drink, live and silent auctions of artwork, silent auctions of local merchants’ donations, and a jazz band. Tickets are available at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com. For information about the event and gala sponsorships, email gallery2117@gmail.com or call Galveston Art League Board President Margo Snider at 409-938-1671.
