TEXAS CITY ISD HAD A BANNER National Signing Day on Thursday as La Marque’s Jackeria Woodkins and Texas City’s Conor Higgs each signed letters of intent in front of friends and family.
Sam Houston State University gets the honor of having Woodkins as part of their women’s track and field team for the 2020-21 season. Woodkins is a two-time UIL state champion in the Class 4A girls’ 400 and will begin the road for a potential threepeat when track and field season begins early next year.
Woodkins has also finished sixth in the girls’ 200 in each of the past two years.
Higgs formally signed his letter of intent with the University of Louisiana, giving the Stings outfielder the opportunity to be coached by former Texas City alum Matt Deggs, who added Higgs among the 11 players he signed in his first recruiting class as the Ragin’ Cajuns’ head coach.
Named the Stings’ MVP of the 2019 season, Higgs also earned first-team all-District 22-5A honors and is regarded as one of the top high school outfielders in a Houston area filled with elite talent at the position.
“Conor fits very well into Coach Deggs’ Pack System as he possesses a notable combination of speed and strength,” said UL baseball assistant coach/recruiting coordinator Jeremy Talbot. “He has the ability to hit gap-to-gap and brings a solid outfield defensive skill set. His well-rounded set of physical tools make him a very promising prospect for our ball club.”
