The Galveston Art League has resumed its low-cost workshops, starting with one that instructs participants on transforming gourds into curvy penguins. Each participant will finish a gourd penguin to take home.
Texas City native Eleanore Wuthrich will lead the workshop from 9:00am to 12:00pm on Saturday, June 26, at the Galveston Art League’s downtown Galveston Gallery, 2117A Postoffice St.
Wuthrich, who has created art with gourds for two decades, will cover safety tips along with the artistic techniques needed to turn a gourd into a penguin or other creature. She has done workshops at the Texas Gourd Festival and also has participated in workshops at the Texas and Arizona Gourd Festivals for 15-plus years.
Most supplies are included in the class fee of $40: gourds, acrylic paint, and some decorating accessories. Wuthrich asks participants to bring these workshop items if possible, although she will have extras on hand for students who don’t have the items: quarter-inch, five-eighths-inch, and 1-inch-wide paintbrushes; a pencil; a heat gun or hair dryer to speed up drying of paint; an apron, if desired; and a mask to protect from gourd dust if gourds are cut open.
This is the first Galveston Art League workshop to be offered since the pandemic began. There’s limited seating will be limited. You may register and pay with a credit card at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com. Need more info? Email gallery2117@gmail.com.
