small artworks from Dec. 2-24

Texas City glass artist Jackie Low’s “Hoo Who” is for sale at the December exhibit of small art in the Galveston Art League Gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in Galveston. Hours: noon-6 Friday-Sunday. Starting about Dec. 7, items will begin selling on  www.GalvestonArtLeague.com.

Throughout December, Galveston Art League has dedicated the front of its gallery to an assortment of small art by league members. All of these pieces – one-of-a-kind 3-D art, paintings, photography, mixed media – cost $75 or less (tax included).

The gallery, at 2117A Postoffice St. in downtown Galveston, is open from noon to 6 p.m. Fridays-Sundays Dec. 2-24; closed on Christmas Day. In addition, starting about Dec. 7 all of the gallery’s art will be pictured and sold on www.GalvestonArtLeague.com with credit card checkout.

December’s special-exhibit artworks measure no more than 14 inches at their longest point, so they’re easy-peasy for shoppers to take with them after purchase. Each piece can be a holiday gift for someone else or an accessory for the buyer’s home or office.

The small, already-framed paintings and photos include landscapes, still lifes, nature photos, seascapes, and more; the subject matter is extremely diverse. Three-dimensional pieces are varied, too – how about a cute and clever handcrafted feeding dish for your pet, a colorful piece of novelty art glass, or a seashell-framed mirror?

This is the third consecutive December for the nonprofit Art League to display small, original artworks upfront in its gallery. Elsewhere in the gallery are dozens of larger artworks by Galveston Art League members as well as two glass display cases containing jewelry and specialty pens. All of the art on display is for sale.

The 108-year-old Galveston Art League invites anyone who appreciates art – artists and non-artists – to join this fun, civic-minded organization. The league has no salaried employees; 100% of its functions are carried out by volunteers who staff the gallery, hang the artwork, organize workshops for adults and kids, and hold three juried competitions and nine member shows each year.

The Galveston Art League is celebrating 108 years of providing opportunities for artists to exhibit and for art lovers to purchase original works of art in Galveston. Volunteers handle all Art League functions, from fundraising to mounting monthly exhibits. Membership is open to non-artists and artists who appreciate visual arts and want to enjoy the benefits of membership.
