Most area high school football teams begin play in their respective districts this week as the games begin to matter when it comes to playoff positioning. Speaking of playoff positioning, the Astros welcome a Royals team that gave them fits in Kansas City last weekend as they can ill afford to slip with both Seattle and Texas nipping at their AL West Division-leading heels.
Wednesday: The Astros conclude their three-game set against the playoff-bound Orioles at 1:10pm. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will have the coverage starting with the pregame show at 12:30pm.
Thursday: Texas City visits Galena Park for their district football opener starting at 7:00pm.
Pasadena Dobie hosts the annual Longhorn Stampede cross country meet that will see the likes of Clear Brook, Clear Falls, Clear Springs, La Marque and Texas City.
Friday: A busy high school football schedule kicks off with Clear Brook at Clear Falls (Veterans Memorial), Clear Creek at Brazoswood, Dickinson at Clear Springs (Challenger/Columbia), Friendswood at Foster, Bellville at La Marque (Victory Sportsnet online), and Dayton at Santa Fe (Clear Life Media Game of the Week) at 7:00pm. Woodlands Christian at state-ranked Hitchcock starts at 7:30pm.
In high school volleyball, Clear Creek at Clear Springs, Clear Falls at Brazoswood, Dickinson at Clear Lake, East Bernard at Hitchcock, and Texas City at Friendswood each start at 6:00pm, with La Porte at Galveston Ball beginning at 6:30pm.
The water polo schedule has Clear Falls at Clear Brook and Clear Springs at Clear Creek. The girls begin at 5:30pm, with the boys beginning at 6:45pm.
Tenniswise, Clear Springs at Clear Brook starts at 3:00pm, followed by Clear Creek at Dickinson at 3:15pm.

The college football slate starts with Auburn at Texas A&M (ESPN) at 11:00am, followed by Texas Southern at Grambling at 2:00pm. Rice at South Florida kicks off at 3:00pm, while Sam Houston State at Houston (ESPN+), Prairie View at Alcorn State, Austin Peay at Stephen F. Austin (ESPN+), Houston Christian at Southeastern Louisiana, Lincoln (CA) at Lamar, and North American University at Incarnate Word (ESPN+) start at 6:00pm. The day ends with #3 Texas at Baylor (KTRK13) at 6:30pm.
Game two of the Royals-Astros starts at 6:10pm. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest hits the air at 5:30pm with the pregame show.
