TO SAY THIS week’s area sports schedule is loaded would be putting it mildly.
The docket also includes Clear Springs alum Marcus Johnson and his Philadelphia
Eagles teammates looking to move one step closer to the Super Bowl when they
host the Atlanta Falcons Saturday at 3:30pm. Fox-26 will have the game live.
Today, Wednesday: La Marque’s wrestling team will hit the mat when the Cougars
take part in a tri-meet at Clear Lake High School that will also feature the host
Falcons and Clear Creek. The action will begin at 4:00pm.
The Rockets make a brief stay at Toyota Center for a 7:00pm tip against the Trail
Blazers. Houston entered the week with a two-game losing streak and had lost
seven of their previous ten contests. Coverage on AT&T Southwest begins with the
pregame show at 6:30pm.
Tomorrow, Thursday: Each of the Clear Creek ISD boys teams will be a part of the
annual CCISD Tourney, which will be held at both Veterans Memorial Stadium and
at Challenger/Columbia Stadium. The three-day tournament also features a host of
the Houston area’s top boys’ soccer squads. Meanwhile, Dickinson’s boys’ soccer
team will take part in the Pasadena/Pearland Tournament and Friendswood’s boys’
head to College Station to participate in the Aggieland Classic.
In girls’ soccer, Clear Brook, Clear Creek and Clear Springs will each be involved in
the I-10 Shootout at Katy, while Friendswood will be taking part in the Brazos Valley
Cup. Each tourney will conclude on Saturday.
Friday: On top of the boys and girls soccer schedule, the evening is — as usual
— filled with boys and girls basketball.
The boys’ hoops slate will have Clear Brook at Clear Springs, Dickinson at Clear
Creek, Clear Falls at Alvin, Friendswood at Clear Lake, Santa Fe at Fort Bend
Marshall and Texas City at Fort Bend Elkins, with each game starting at 7:00pm.
State-ranked Hitchcock is at Houston Harmony, while state-ranked La Marque visits
Rice Consolidated. Both contests tip off at 7:30pm.
On the girls side, state-ranked Hitchcock is at Houston Harmony and La Marque at
Rice Consolidated each begin at 6:15pm. Clear Springs at Clear Brook, Clear Creek
at Dickinson, Alvin at Clear Falls, Clear Lake at Friendswood, Fort Bend Marshall
at Santa Fe and Fort Bend Elkins each start at 7:00pm.
Both Texas City’s boys and girls soccer teams will be in action, with the Stingarees
boys hosting New Caney at 7:00pm, the same time the TC girls face off at Dickinson.
Expect a high-scoring affair as the Rockets visit the Suns in a nationally televised
game on ESPN beginning at 9:30pm. Houston defeated Phoenix 142-116 in the first
meeting between the teams on November 16, scoring 90 points in the first half, a
total that tied the second-highest scoring opening 24 minutes in NBA history.
Saturday: The powerlifting season begins as Dickinson hosts a meet at McAdams
Junior High School. Gators coach Earl Ricicar has a load of talent coming back
after last season saw his then-young team develop to where a second state championship
in four years is a strong possibility.
