Dickinson is now the area’s only ranked team in this week’s Dave Campbell’s

Texas Football poll. The Gators moved up to 18th in the Class 6A rankings follow ing

a 55-14 win at Clear Falls. Now at 7-0 on the season, coach John Snelson’s

team will look to put themselves in sole possession of first place in District 24-6A

when they host Clear Springs this Friday at 7:00pm.

Friendswood lost its standing in the Class 5A-1 rankings when the Mustangs fell

short in a 28-20 home loss to Richmond Foster on Friday. They will have a great

chance to return to the rankings win a win over an undefeated Shadow Creek on

Friday night. The Sharks are ranked sixth following a 59-10 victory over Galveston

Ball last week.

*In their loss to Foster, Friendswood installed a “Big Man Backfield” for short

yardage situations that included senior offensive lineman Michael Gibson at full back.

The 6’3, 310-pounder had three carries on the evening, with two of his runs

resulting in first downs.

What’s the secret to Gibson’s running style? “Don’t fumble,” he said.

*La Marque will seek to snap the school’s longest losing streak in 61 years

when the Cougars visit Houston Scarborough on Friday. Last week’s 26-0 loss at

Sweeny was the seventh straight for La Marque dating back to their area round

playoff loss to Franklin last season and matched the seven-game losing streak by

the 1958 squad that had started the season with a 2-1 record.

Even at 0-6, La Marque still has a chance to make the postseason for a ninth

straight year. The Coogs would need to win at least three of their last four (at Scarborough,

vs. Houston Washington, at Wharton, vs. Houston Kashmere) to have a

chance to compete for a run to the state title.

*Former Clear Springs standout Marcus Johnson scored the first regular season

touchdown of his career in the Colts’ 42-34 loss at the Jets on Sunday afternoon.

The University of Texas alum pulled in a 34-yard scoring toss from Andrew Luck

early in the first quarter that tied the game at 7-7 while finishing with two catches

for 52 yards before leaving the game late in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury.

Johnson was a member of the Eagles’ Super Bowl 52 championship team before

he was traded to the Seahawks in March. He was then dealt to the Colts

before the start of the regular season.

*Both Dickinson’s Brad Woodard and La Marque’s LaDarrian Ellis-Jones appeared

in Grambling’s 34-21 win over Texas Southern on Saturday. Woodard had

nine carries for 26 yards for TSU while Ellis-Jones gained 16 yards on three carries.

Grambling’s win improved their record to 3-3 on the season, with TSU falling to

1-5 overall.
