TOURNEY FEVER has infected the area basketball scene, as 10 of the area’s
boys’ teams and five girls’ teams take part in tournaments throughout the area,
with the annual Carlisle/Kruger Classic that features seven of the area’s boys’
teams, as the highlight.
WEDNESDAY: The Rockets make a brief appearance at Toyota Center when
they host the in-state rival Mavericks at 7:00pm. It will be the first time Houston
fans will get a look at Dallas rookie Luka Doncic, who comes into the week averaging
19.1 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game. Both teams came
into the week with identical 9-9 records, a mark that will change when AT&T
Sportsnet Southwest begins coverage after the pregame show at 6:30pm.
THURSDAY: The majority of the area’s boys’ basketball teams will take part
in the annual Carlisle/Kruger Classic, which will be held at both Clear Creek
and Clear Lake High Schools. Each of the five CCISD schools (Brook, Creek,
Falls, Lake, Springs), Galveston Ball and Texas City will compete in a three day
tourney which concludes with Saturday afternoon’s championship game.
Meanwhile, Friendswood and state-ranked La Marque take part in the Needville
Tournament, Hitchcock will play in the Goose Creek ISD Tournament and Santa
Fe will be among the teams at the Tidehaven Tournament.
In the girls basketball side of town, Clear Brook heads off to the Sam Rayburn
Tournament, Clear Springs is at the Deer Park Tournament, Friendswood competes
in the Lady Spartan Tournament in Stafford, La Marque is at the Young
Men’s Business League Tournament in Beaumont, while Santa Fe is at the Lamar
ISD Tournament.
FRIDAY: There is one non-tournament game on the girls’ basketball slate, as
Crosby visits Clear Creek for a 5:00pm tip-off.
Houston concludes its Texas Two-Step when the Rockets visit the Spurs for a
nationally televised game on ESPN beginning at 7:00pm. San Antonio won the
first meeting this season when they held off Houston for a 96-89 win on November
10. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will also carry the game and will start its
pregame coverage at 6:30pm.
SATURDAY: Student-athletes seeking to bolster their chances to be accepted
into college will be taking the SAT throughout the area.
The Texas City High School swim team will be in action as they take part in the
Brazoswood Invitational, which will be held on the campus of Brazoswood High
School.
The Bulls make their only regular season appearance to Toyota Center when
the Rockets welcome them for a 7:00pm tip. Houston, which will close out its
2018-19 series with Chicago, took down the Bulls in a 96-88 win at United Center
on November 3. AT&T Sportsnet Southwest will start its coverage with the
pregame show at 6:30pm.
The Fertitta Center makes its grand debut when Houston hosts 21st ranked Oregon
at 8:00pm. Formally known as Hofheinz Pavilion, the two-year project has
brought the 50-year-old facility into the 21st century as a state-of-the-art sports
venue that will host UH athletic events along with select high school basketball
games involving area teams. ESPN2 will have the game live.
