COM EMPLOYEES VOLUNTEER AT RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE (Texas City)— More than 20 volunteers from College of the Mainland hosted a Valentine’s Daythemed evening for residents at Ronald McDonald House Galveston on Friday, Feb. 8. COMPeers, a College of the Mainland employee volunteer group, organized a pizza party and provided arts & craft supplies so children staying at the Ronald McDonald House could make Valentine’s Day goody bags. The Ronald McDonald House is like a home away from home for families of children who are patients at the University of Texas Medical Branch, the Transitional Learning Center and Shriners Hospital for Children. Many of the children and their families who stay at the House are burn victims from around the world. “It is very rewarding to have not only fellow employees and family members join us but COM students as well. It was an awesome day,” said volunteer Michelle Gerami. COMPeers also donated five gallons of toiletries for the residents.
Safety courses aimed at preparing individuals entering the occupational safety and health workforce and for those already working in the field are being offered this spring at the College of the Mainland’s Gulf Coast Safety Institute. The Gulf Coast Safety Institute is continuing its partnership with The University of Texas at Arlington’s OSHA Education Center and The Advanced Environmental Training Institute to bring these needed courses and training to the Greater Houston. “Being knowledgeable about workplace hazards and employee rights helps contribute to both the productivity and safety culture at one’s worksite. It is important that our workers are trained and educated”, said Cindy Lewis, director of the Gulf Coast Safety Institute. “These courses are comprehensive, but personal and relevant to the ever-changing policies and best practices of safety.” Courses being offered are intended to provide all employees and professionals with key information about safety in their corresponding fields. Participants also will discuss methods and/or best practices to identify, prevent and reduce risk of injury from job-related hazards. Training will be offered throughout the 2018-2019 academic year.
Courses being offered to date include:
