During May, the Galveston Art League will exhibit artworks that were accepted into its Spring 2022 Juried Show. Nonmembers are eligible to enter this contest, which awards cash prizes in six categories plus best of show.
Attention, area artists! Galveston Art League is holding its Spring 2022 Juried Show during May. Any artist 16 and older may enter the competition; Art League membership is not required.
Entry is straightforward. Bring up to a maximum of three pieces to the Galveston Art League Gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in downtown Galveston, between 10:00am to 5:00pm Monday, April 25. If you can’t come that day, you may arrange an appointment and drop off your art on Sunday, April 24, as detailed in the competition prospectus, available on www.GalvestonArtLeague.com/exhibits.
Amanda Barry Jones, an award-winning mixed media artist, will judge the competition. A professional artist, Jones’ creativity is wide-ranging and includes drawing, painting, welding, casting bronze and more. She has 15-plus years of experience working in clay and has taught ceramics for eight years. Jones received her B.A. in ceramics from Lamar University in Beaumont. She also holds an M.A. in fine arts from Houston Baptist University.
A Houston resident, Jones directs the ceramics program at Galveston College; she has taught art history and art appreciation at Alvin Community College since 2017. Jones has curated visiting artist exhibitions and the annual student show in Galveston College’s Fine Art Gallery. Jones’ work has been accepted into many juried exhibitions around the Lone Star State.
These are the contest categories:
- Works on canvas or board. Oil paintings and acrylic paintings often fit this category.
- 3-D. The sky’s the limit: sculpture, pottery, metal work, carvings, art dolls, more.
- Mixed-media wall-hung (collages, for instance).
- Traditional photography.
- Digital art. Art that has been created from scratch on a computer as well as significantly altered photography are included in this category.
- Works on paper. This includes most watercolor paintings, pastels, drawings, etc.
Cash prizes are awarded as follows: best of show, $300; first-place winners in each category, $100; second-place in the categories, $50. Entry fees are $20 per work for nonmembers; Art League members receive a discount: $15 each for their first 2 entries and $5 for third.
Artists are not required to sell their works, but are permitted to do so. Pieces may be marked “not for sale.” Full details about this competition, from size and hanging requirements to entry forms, available in the prospectus.
This juried contest is one of three that the Galveston Art League, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization, will hold this year. Founded in 1914, the Art League organizes the competitions as part of its mission to support visual arts and arts education in Galveston County and beyond. The league is largely supported by an annual fundraiser gala, sales of artwork in its gallery, and membership and gallery fees.
