Galveston College Quickstart Star Is Open For BusinessGALVESTON ISLAND, Texas – There were hints of excellence when Ricky Morales first registered for Galveston College’s Quickstart HVAC Helper training program in the spring of 2018. First, he scored 100 percent on his intake assessment. Then, after eight weeks of training and passing all of his class tests with an average of 99 percent, he became a licensed and certified technician. Even more incredible was the fact that he passed all four sections of his EPA certification exam – an accomplishment not usually achieved until after two years of studying. And he passed it on his first try. If all these accomplishments were not enough, he and his wife delivered a new baby at the same time he completed the Quickstart program. The new baby joined five siblings who range in age from 4 to 15. Shortly thereafter, Morales enrolled in Galveston College’s Associate of Applied Science in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration program. He is scheduled to graduate this fall at the top of his class and on the President’s List after completing one more class. This summer, he received his contractor’s license and opened his own heating and cooling business, One Call. All this was accomplished a little over a year after completing the Quickstart eight-week training program at Galveston College. “We are so proud of Ricky and wish him the best of luck in his new business,” said Mary Powers, job placement navigator at Galveston College. Funded by a grant from the Texas Workforce Commission, the Quickstart programs are designed to help individuals find entry-level jobs in the fast-growing HVAC and electrical industries. In the eight-week program, students are presented with the basics of a trade, including safety procedures, proper tool usage, regulations, codes and more. In addition to job training, Galveston College offers career counseling and job placement assistance. ************Tuition is free for those accepted into the programs. However, students must purchase their own steel-toed boots. An individual applying to a Quickstart program must be age 18 or older, be a United States citizen or certified to work in the United States, and meet United States Military Selective Service registration requirements, if male. Following acceptance into the program, the applicant must meet with Galveston College’s job placement navigator and bring required documents.
