NOW IT’S OUR TURN

Most of us living I Galveston county have had some kind of interaction with the Salvation Army in the last two years – many of us received some kind of assistance from them after Harvey. Well, now its our turn to return the kindness by helping them recover from major construction that has kept customers away from the Thrift Store to the point that they are having trouble keeping the doors open. It has also impacted the Shelter they run and Holly Mc Donald, Communications Director is asking for donations of blankets and pillows for the shelter.

“Anyone who travels Avenue G between 54th and 51st to get to the Pelican Island Bridge knows that the City of Galveston has been working on the street for many months, closing different portions on different days without notice. Commuters have adapted to the unpredictable surprise closures by changing routes at a moments notice. Unfortunately, The Salvation Army, which sits at the corner of Avenue G and 51st Street, does not have the luxury of taking another way. The 124-bed shelter relies on income from the attached thrift store to serve the homeless of Galveston and to assist those who are struggling.”

“We have been affected by road work on Avenue G for a long time,” says Captain Nathanael Doria, Corps Officer at The Salvation Army. “We have just about come to the end of our resources in terms of operating a thrift store that we aren’t able to provide reliable access to for shoppers and donors. While local leadership is working with Divisional Headquarters to identify funding to keep the doors open, we are turning to the local community and asking for help to keep this vital resource available for the community and those we serve.”

The Salvation Army relies solely on the community it serves to support the needs of the area. To help with this need, you can make a donation online at www.salvationarmygalvestoncounty.org, send a check to The Salvation Army at PO Box 990, Galveston, TX 77553 or drop your gift at the Family Store at 601 51st Street. Parking is available across 51st Street next to the Pelican Island Bridge if Avenue G is inaccessible.
