Award-winning artist Randall Kirby Cogburn will teach the Galveston Art League workshop “Painting Exciting Still Lifes” on Saturday, Oct. 5. The workshop, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., is being held at the Art League’s gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. in downtown Galveston.
The workshop suits beginners to accomplished artists who may choose any medium: oil or acrylic paint, watercolor, pastels, colored pencils, and even markers, Cogburn says. Attendees will need to bring the following supplies: two 8-by-10 surfaces – paper, canvas, board – and an easel, along with other tools and materials associated with their medium, such as a basic color palette, a palette, brushes, and so on.
The workshop costs $150, and you can register and pay via credit card or PayPal at GalvestonArtLeague.com (click on “Workshops”).
Cogburn, a member of the American Impressionist Society, has studied a wide range of styles, from realist to abstract and impressionist to classical. He uses loose and precise brushwork to apply vivid colors with an impasto feel, giving a sense of design and flair while revealing abstract influences.
An accomplished plein air artist (painting outdoors), Cogburn is known for his impressionist cityscapes, seascapes, landscapes, and portraits; RandallCogburn.com shows a variety of his works. Many of his paintings depict scenes and life in Galveston, where he lives.
He exhibits and sells at Island Framed in Galveston and enters competitions at the Galveston Art League Gallery (details: GalvestonArtLeague.com – click on “Juried Shows”).
The Galveston Art League, a 105-year-old all-volunteer nonprofit organization, hosts this workshop as part of its mission to promote visual arts and art education in the greater Galveston County area. One principal way the league raises money is through an annual gala, which will be 6-10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, in the San Luis Hotel Grand Ballroom in Galveston. The gala is a laid-back event that includes auctions, a gourmet dinner, an open bar, and live music.
Gala tickets are sold via PayPal or credit card at GalvestonArtLeague.com or may be purchased at the Galveston Art League Gallery, open noon to 6 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays. More gala information is posted on the website; if you have questions, email gallery2117@gmail.com or call 409-938-1671.
