IRVING, Texas – More homes in Texas are broken into on Dec. 1 than any other day of the year, according to data from Allstate Insurance. With many Texans traveling this holiday season, it’s important to keep your homes locked-up and vacation plans under wraps.

Allstate analyzed claims data over the last ten years (2009-2018) and found more Allstate customers in Texas experienced home burglary claims on Dec. 1 than any other day of the year.

“Many people associate the holidays with travelling to visit family or exchanging gifts. The holiday season can be a hectic time; it’s important to be diligent in protecting your home and minimizing the risks of having it broken into. Says Jay Blanco, Allstate agency owner in Katy. “Think twice before advertising your Thanksgiving travel plans on social media or leaving your Black Friday shopping boxes out on the curb. The last thing you want is for a break-in to ruin your holiday fun.”

“Knowing what you own will help in the unfortunate event that your items are stolen. Be sure to make a written list of your valuables with the serial numbers and keep it in a safe place. Don’t store it on your computer in case it is stolen in a burglary. When it comes to electronics, don’t leave the empty boxes on the curb, as they may invite burglars to steal your new items.” Said Officer Robert Reeves, Irving Police Department public information officer. “Many homeowners also own storage units, so it’s important to make sure you inventory the contents and keep it locked. We’ve seen an increase in storage unit burglaries, so in addition to ensuring your home is safe and secured, we encourage homeowners to look after their storage units too.”, said Reeves.

Avoid the thieves’ target list

To help protect your home and make it less appealing to burglars, here are four safety tips from Allstate:

1. Lock up

Even if you’re just running out on a short errand, make sure all doors and windows are locked. Steel doors and deadbolt locks provide the best security. Also, always keep your garage door shut and locked.

2. Advertise deterrents

An alarm system is an excellent deterrent to crime, as long as it’s used consistently. The system should include a loud siren and motion sensors. Display security system decals on your windows and doors.

3. Don’t publicize your plans

Be careful when tweeting or posting Facebook and Instagram updates about the vacation you’re on or the event you’re at. If you are away, keep lights on a timer, have your mail and newspaper delivery stopped and ask a family member or trusted neighbor to pick up any packages or flyers left outside.

4. Know what you’ve got.

If you become the unfortunate victim of theft, it will make the claim process easier if you have a complete inventory of any missing items. Use tools like the Allstate Digital Locker™ to help organize your personal property by room, category, or in item lists.

Understand your insurance coverage

In the unfortunate event that you experience a home break in, it’s important to understand your insurance coverage. Personal property inside or outside of your home may be covered under a homeowners policy. Allstate encourages consumers to contact their insurance company or agent to fully understand their coverage and insurance options.
