WITH COVID-19 NUMBERS continuing to rise, La Marque Mayor Bobby Hocking took a preemptive strike late last week when he announced that masks will be required throughout the city.
Hocking’s decision arrived at a time where COVID-19 numbers have made a sharp trend upward throughout Galveston County. The area had a total of 251 new COVID-19 cases over a two-day period on Friday and Saturday, with La Marque seeing its total cases rising to 142 by Sunday evening.
La Marque followed the leads of the city of Austin and Harris County, which both signed orders last week that required both customers and employees to wear masks inside businesses. LM City Manager Tink Jackson said that masks are available at City Hall for those who are in need of one. All that is required for residents is to drive through the utility payment windows and show either an ID or a utility bill with a La Marque address on it. There is a limit of four masks per household.
The state recorded a new high-water mark for COVID-19 cases on Sunday with 4,430, marking the fourth time in a five-day period that Texas topped itself in the number of new cases. As of Saturday, more than 2,100 Texans had lost their lives to the disease.
The recent rise resulted in Governor Greg Abbott holding a news conference on Monday afternoon to discuss the issue.
