With the temperature’s so high outside, many gardeners are spending more time inside. Some are discovering new magazines, websites and other ways to enhance their gardening ideas. It’s also a good time to reflect on what was successful in your garden and think about what you want to plant for Fall.
I was very fortunate to have done so well with my tomatoes and peppers this summer. It’s probably the best that I have ever had! So that makes me think back as to what I did different this time. First of all, I started with a good organic mixture in the soil…I believe that is the biggest factor. Next, thanks for one of Garden Club members ~ Barbara Smith ~, I had some very nice tomato transplants to get a good start with. I inspected my garden daily to insure nothing else was enjoying them…I did not have even one tomato worm this year, unlike last year where I found them daily. I’m not sure why they didn’t come this year…apparently there was no “Welcome Mat”.
My heat-loving peppers and okra are still going strong. Now that I have pulled-up the plants that are finished producing my garden still looks very nice because I also planted flowers along with the vegetables.
Although we are just finishing the summer growing season with warm-weather lovers such as peppers, tomatoes, and zucchini, it’s time to think about your fall crops. Mid to late August and September are ideal times to plant veggies for fall picking.
My Fall garden always does well with Kale, Broccoli and various Greens. The best thing about Greens are the more you harvest, the more they produce. You should have enough to share with friends and family.
The Texas City Garden Club selected the home of Kit Wilkinson for this month’s “Spot of Beauty”. Kit along with her grandson Micah Lozano has made the front yard into a beautiful oasis. Take a look at 1320 14th Street North.

As the days, weeks and months go by, I now have a new appreciation for many aspects in my life. I appreciate my home more, I’m thankful for my family and their good health and I’m proud of the community we live in. The situation we are in has taught us to enjoy living, rather than rushing trough it. It is teaching us patience and pushing us beyond what we know. Now is the time to make your life richer and fuller, time to learn something new. We now have the time to improve our everyday routines, from laundry to meals and making your home into a haven.
