Agreeing With God

In Matthew 18: 19-20, Jesus said, “If two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of My Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, there am I in the midst of them.”

What did He mean by these promises?

This is an important question, because today it has been made to mean, by many people, that if two believers simply agreement on anything, that God is obligated to give them their request. The suggestion is that “the agreeing” is the basis. Do that, and God must answer. This is not what Jesus said. He did not make “agreement on anything” the basis for God’s answer. Quite the contrary. For it is possible for Christians to get together and agree on things totally outside of God’s will. It is a fact that thousands could gather together and agree together on something which is completely away from the Truth.

The only “agreement” God will answer is an agreement He agrees with. In other words, if two agree on anything according to the will of God, then God will answer. But if our request is not according to His will, that is, if God doesn’t agree with us, then it does not matter how many people we have joining into our request. God isn’t going to answer us.

Power in prayer is never the result of a large numbers of people merely agreeing.  Power in prayer comes by praying according to the will of God with an unconditionally surrendered heart. It comes by agreeing that God’s will be done, no matter what. Get a large group of people to do that and you’ll see results.

God has never given man a license to tell Him what to do. Neither has He given us a secret or a complicated system by which only a chosen few can approach His throne. All believers have direct access to God through Jesus Christ. And when several believers get together and agree to seek the will of God through prayer, then God says, “I will answer.”

Prayer is a process of discerning and surrendering to the will of God. It is our means of reaching from this realm into the realm of God. And if we continually seek the will of God, agreeing upon it in Christ, then our request will always be one God can agree with an answer.

Jesus wants us to agree and he will see to it that it comes to pass. The word “agree” is translated in The Amplified Bible as “agree and harmonizing together or make a symphony together.” The word “symphony” means “all available instruments in harmony.” You must have your spirit, mind and actions in agreement with the Word. Agreeing spiritually is to agree with the word of God. God’s Word is true and that it will come to pass.
