As the Galveston Art League’s Featured Artist for January, Julie Chapa displays her strong affection for nature in her photography. About a dozen of Chapa’s finely detailed pictures are on display and for sale from January 2-24 near the front of the Galveston Art League Gallery, 2117A Postoffice St. The downtown Galveston gallery is closed New Year’s Day, but otherwise open from 12:00pm to 6:00pm Fridays through Sundays.
For people who can’t make it to the gallery, the Art League’s January show of Chapa’s photos along with other Art League members’ works is displayed online at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com. Easy checkout is offered via credit card, or shoppers may contact gallery2117@gmail.com to arrange another form of payment. The league offers curbside pickup; shipping can be arranged for out-of-town buyers.
Chapa captures many types of images, but favors birds and landscapes, often focusing on the wildlife and scenery of the Texas Gulf Coast. Her fondness for nature started long ago in Northern Michigan, where she grew up.
An award-winning photographer, she is mostly self-taught but polishes her skills by taking workshops and viewing internet tutorials. “I prefer to take photos in early morning, when the light is soft and the world is just waking up,” says Chapa, a resident of Rosharon.
She likes to inspire people who see her photos “to get outside and explore new locations or recapture memories of past adventures.” Chapa, a medical technologist by trade, majored in biology at Central Michigan University.
Some of her work was recently accepted into the Houston PhotoFest International Juried Show. Chapa belongs to the Texas Photographic Society, and she is a professional member of the Galveston Art League.
The all-volunteer league invites everyone who appreciates art to become a member, and it welcomes non-artists as well as artists who work in any medium. The Galveston Art League, which has never had a salaried employee on its staff, was established in 1914 to promote visual arts and art education in Galveston County and beyond.
