The Salvation Army emergency shelter at 601 51st Street and the emergency shelter opened by Galveston CoCares at Central Church at 3308 Avenue O ½ both lost power this morning while sheltering the homeless from the winter weather. Due to widespread outages and the predicted delay in restoring power to the island, there is no place to relocate. A total of 92 people staying in these shelters will remain there because there are no other options available.
Items needed are portable lights (lanterns/flashlights) and batteries to go in them, power banks for staff to charge cell phones and handwarmers. Word from emergency management officials is that this power outage could last for a couple more days.
In addition, The Salvation Army of Galveston County closed its administrative office in Galveston and the Social Service office and Boys and Girls Club in Texas City on Tuesday, February 16. Please bring your donations to one of the two shelters listed above. Call Holly McDonald at 09-939-9013 for more information.
As always, The Salvation Army is grateful to the community for their provision of resources that allow the doors to be open for those in need.
