Houston PetSet, a local nonprofit organization working to end Houston’s homeless animal crisis, granted $25,000 to Fix Ur Pet Galveston County so they could open their doors to the public on January 2, 2024. This low-cost, no frills veterinary clinic offers affordable spay and neuter surgeries and dental care in addition to wellness appointments. Though they are located in Galveston County, Fix Ur Pet does not limit their services to residents of the area, nor do they require any proof of income. If pet owners can get to their appointment, they are welcome.
Fix Ur Pet Galveston County is an offshoot of S.A.V.E. Rescue Coalition, an animal rescue that has been a Houston PetSet partner and grant recipient for the past several years. Director Angela McGee approached Houston PetSet in the fall of 2023 seeking assistance with funding this clinic, and with proof of their success already evident from their temporary spay and neuter clinic running since 2020, Houston PetSet agreed to provide $25,000 in start-up funds.
“After fixing nearly 9,000 dogs and cats over the last three years, I realized the missing piece for so many pet owners was access to affordable, accessible basic care for their pets,” said Fix Ur Pet Galveston County founder Angela McGee. “Providing these services would allow owners to take better preventive care, and allow them to seek help for minor injuries and illness for their beloved pets. We are excited that Houston PetSet saw the merit to our vision and helped us get our clinic up and running in record time.”
On Friday, February 16, members of the Houston PetSet team visited the clinic for a grand tour and celebration of partnership. Since opening this year, Fix Ur Pet Galveston County has already performed 730 spay/neuter surgeries, 39 dental cleanings, and 105 wellness exams, and dozens of other vital services at low or no cost to owners, rescues, and shelter partners.
“We are so glad to support this clinic and Angela’s efforts in the community,” said Houston PetSet Co-President Tena Lundquist Faust. “Affordable veterinary services are greatly needed in Houston and Galveston and Angela has filled a gap in the vet community. We are grateful to Angela for all that she has done over the years for the animals of Houston and beyond.”
“Angela and the clinic provide invaluable support for the owners and pets of Galveston County with low cost spay and neuter and wellness services. She also works very closely with the Galveston Humane Society and the City of Galveston,” added Purvez Captain, Vice President of the Houston PetSet Board.
“This clinic and the work being done by Angela and her team is a model that should be replicated throughout the Greater Houston area.”
