What: | Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority is inviting its membership to join the fight against sickle cell disease with an American Red Cross blood drive Wednesday, July 31 in Houston.More than 150 blood donors are signed up to give. Donors and people whose lives have been directly impacted sickle cell disease will be on scene to share their inspiring stories of donations of lifesaving blood. Leaders from Sigma Gamma Rho and the Red Cross will also be on hand to share the importance of this partnership and drive. |
Why: | Sickle cell is a devastating disease that acutely affects Black people. People battling sickle sickle cell may need as many as 100 units of blood in a year. The Red Cross is on the frontline of rallying community partners and donations to ensure those fighting sickle cell have the blood they need. This drive is part of a community initiative by the sorority during its 60th biennial Boule in Houston this week, bringing 10,000 people to the area for an estimated $550,000 philanthropic impact. |
