DISTRICT 12-3A-1 champion Hitchcock dominated
the honors when the all-district team was announced
last week, with running back/defensive lineman
Xavian Hampton and coach Cody Carney among the
winners.
Hampton was selected as the 12-3A-1 co-MVP,
sharing the honor with Hempstead receiver/defensive
back Delarrian Turner-Yell. Carney, who filled
the coaching void for Hitchcock when Craig Smith
was forced to step aside for health reasons, was
selected as coach of the year as he led the team
to an 8-4 record and a spotless 5-0 in district play.
Sophomore Pacey Jones was selected as the 12-3A-
1 newcomer of the year for his efforts at quarterback,
where he directed an offense that ranked among
Houston area leaders in rushing yards per game.
La Marque running back Perry Preston, who
recorded a third straight season of over 1,000 yards
rushing, was named the district’s offensive player of
the year.
Hitchcock running back Drevian Archibald, fullback
Tyger Turner, linemen Jayden Payne, Josh Castilleja
and J.J. Gutierrez represented the Bulldogs on the
first team offense, while Gutierrez and fellow defensive
lineman John Scott, linebacker Randy Williams,
Turner (at linebacker), defensive backs Deonza
McCardell and Rodnell Mason received first team
defense nods. Gutierrez was also a first teamer for
his work as the Bulldogs’ punter.
The Cougars were represented on the first team
offense by quarterback Myles Launius, receiver Joey
White and linemen James Lofton and Pedro Rubio.
Jeremiah Taylor was La Marque’s first team utility
player, while lineman Marlon Ford and linebackers
Jaden Bishop and Malik Holmes received first team
defense honors.
On the second team offense, McCardell (at running
back), tight end Darrence Barnes, Scott (at
lineman), linemen Joseph Collins and Kobie Vinson
made the team for Hitchcock, with Payne (at lineman),
linebackers James Robinson and Linje Ramey
and defensive backs Chris Richardson and Deon
Singleton made the second team defense for the
Bulldogs.
La Marque’s second team offensive nods went to
fullback Norvan Saldana, receiver Devin Smith and
lineman Herschel Wafer, while linemen Jerry Evans
and Joel Sumlin and defensive backs Eddie Elam
and Travarious Saldana made the second team
defense.
