PEARLAND IS the site for the 2018 Texas Amateur Athletic Federation Winter OF WAYS THIS WEEK
Games, which will be held Friday thru Sunday. Thousands of amateur athletes,
including many in the Galveston County area, are expected to participate in 15
events that vary from archery and golf to 7on7 football and wheelchair rugby.
The city won the rights to host the next two TAAF Winter Games after Frisco hosted
the event last year. Pearland’s weather and proximity to Houston were two strong
factors that worked in its favor. First-rate facilities and the ability for fans to move
from event to event were also key in the successful bid.
“We’ve been really impressed with the community support and look forward to hosting
this amazing event in Pearland,” said Parks and Recreation Assistant Director
Carry Capers.
Opening Day will feature pickleball and wheelchair rugby. Saturday will commence
with a bulk of the events that include basketball, golf, lacrosse, soccer and swimming,
while powerlifting will be featured on Sunday.
As of press time, registration for the event is still open. Athletes can visit TAAF.com
and sign up. The website also has a complete list of times and locations for each of
the events.
“We’re extremely proud to host this event and welcome thousands of athletes to our
city,” said Kim Sinistore, executive director of the Pearland Convention and Visitors
Bureau.
Winners in each division of this weekend’s games will automatically qualify for the
national State Games of America 2019, which will be held in Lynchburg, Va.
College Station was selected as the site for the next two TAAF Summer Games,
which will be held on July 26-29
