HAVING VISITED DICKEY’S Barbecue Pit in Houston, Terry Eagleton found great joy on Thursday when he realized he wouldn’t have to drive up I-45 North in order to partake in his favorite meal at Dickey’s, the Brisket Mac Stack. “I’ve waited awhile to see if the area would finally have a great place for barbecue,” a smiling and visibly satisfied Eagleton said. “I have to say, it was worth the wait.” Dickey’s became the newest member of the Galveston County eating establishment, as its longanticipated grand opening on Thursday was highlighted by a ribbon-cutting ceremony from the Texas City-La Marque Chamber of Commerce that was followed by a day filled with a stream of customers. Located in front of Sam’s Club and Wal-Mart, Dickey’s is in an idea spot for hungry customers who have completed their shopping. The location will also pay off long term as Texas City’s Lago Mar continues to expand while La Marque is on the cusp of a revival of its financial fortunes. “We expect to be at our peak during the dinner hours,” said Lesa Covert, who co-owns Dickey’s with her husband, David. “It took some time to finally get everything together, but we’re very happy we finally opened.” Warren Flannigan was among those happy to see Dickey’s doors opened. He was among those who took advantage of a coupon that offered a free Classic Sandwich with the purchase of any side. “To be honest, I’ve never tried their barbecue,” said Flannigan. “I just wanted to see what it was all about.” Covert said brisket was the most popular meat of the first day. As is the case with each of the other 132 Dickey’s franchises across the state, all of the meat is smoked low and slow each night over a Hickory wood that gives the meat its signature flavor. Covert is also excited about the timing of the opening, as it comes more than a week before Super Bowl 53. “We’re prepared for the game,” she said, as Dickey’s will offer catering at prices between $7.95 and $12.95 per person along with party platters of tacos, sliders and desserts ranging between $19.95 and $36.95.
