As the Galveston Art League’s Featured Artist from Oct. 31 to Dec. 1, Sandy Lamoey will exhibit a dozen or so of her paintings in the league’s gallery at 2117A Postoffice St. in Galveston. Gallery hours are noon to 6 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays and during ArtWalk.
After initially painting watercolors in a realistic vein, Lamoey segued into abstracts that combine painting with handmade fiber paper from Asia; these include her Space Series: “Ice & Mind” and “Ancient Abyss.” She also paints abstracts in oil using vivid colors and shapes to capture the imagination; “Stellar Spectra” is an example. (To see more of her work, visit “Sandy Lamoey – Art & Abstracts” on Facebook.)
Lamoey majored in graphic design at Ohio University, with typography and illustration foremost in her education. For many years she lived in Europe, where she visited museums and continued to study the works of the Old Masters as well as today’s modern artists who have influenced her work.
Lamoey is a professional member of the all-volunteer Galveston Art League (learn more about membership levels for artists and non-artists at www.GalvestonArtLeague.com – click on “Join”). She received a first-place award in a 2018 Art League competition for her watercolor “Red River.”
The Art League holds three competitions per year as part of its mission to expand art education and appreciation in Galveston County and beyond. Visit www.GalvestonArtLeague.com for details.
The nonprofit Art League supports itself largely through memberships, contributions, and an annual fall gala. The league, founded in 1914, has never had a salaried staff member.
